Scalp dermatitis can cause itching and irritation. Shampoo treatments can help remove flakes caused by dead cells from the skin.

In many instances, a scalp psoriasis treatment is something that can be taken care of at home. This should only be done after first having the symptoms checked out by a doctor to make sure there is nothing more serious going on. Psoriasis is a condition in which the cells of the skin grow abnormally fast.

The rapid production of skin cells causes dead dry skin to accumulate resulting in a layer of thick scales. This disease is a very common condition of the skin. Psoriasis can occur on the scalp, knees, elbows, and lower back. According to Mayo Clinic, psoriasis is a chronic condition in which a person can go into remission between flare-ups.

Psoriasis of the Scalp Shampoo Treatments

Patients with psoriasis of the scalp can find relief by using certain shampoos. Look for shampoos that have salicylic acid or tar in their ingredients. According to 1,801 Home Remedies by the editors of Reader's Digest (Reader's Digest, April 2004), it is best to start out using these shampoos once a day.

Apply the shampoo directly onto the scalp. Let it stay on the scalp for at least 10 minutes. Once the psoriasis symptoms stabilize, it will only be necessary to use the treatment shampoos once a week. Find multiple shampoos that can be used as a treatment for psoriasis of the scalp. Patients need to periodically change shampoos because the symptoms tend to become resistant when the same treatment is used over time.

Mild cases of psoriasis of the scalp can be effectively treated using shampoos that have the ingredients zinc pyrithione, chloroxine, or selenium sulfide. These ingredients are found in some of the popular dandruff shampoos. To get rid of excess dry flakes, apply olive oil to the scalp at night and put on a shower cap. Leave it on over night and rinse it out in the morning.

Psoriasis and Diet

Some health care professionals advise their patients that there is a link between psoriasis and diet. Foods that are charcoal grilled or fried should be avoided by people who have psoriasis. The grease and oil from these foods have trans fats which can aggravate psoriasis symptoms. According to The Psoriasis Cure by Lisa LeVan (Penguin Group USA, May 1, 1999), charcoal grilled foods have toxins that can cause the formation of harmful free radicals.

To reduce the potentially damaging effects of free radicals, eat foods that contain antioxidants. Vitamin A is a good source for antioxidants. Get this vitamin by eating cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, carrots, peaches, and other yellow and orange colored fruits and vegetables. Vitamins C and E are other forms of antioxidants. Vitamin C is contained in many citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit. Vitamin E is found in nuts, avocados, seeds and wheat germ.
