While extended exposure to the sun speeds up the aging process, there is some prevention you can take, to eliminate ugly spots and blemishes.

Everyone ages, but that does not mean that one can’t do something about it. Age spots show especially at areas, which are openly exposed to the sun. The first rule therefore is, to avoid extended sun exposure. It actually would be appropriate to call the brown spots, which mostly blemish the face and the back of the hands, sunspots. But since the cosmetic industry focuses on delaying the natural aging process, the term age spots became popular.

The Cause of Age Spots

In general age spots can range from freckle-size to more than a centimeter and are brown or even grey in color. Since they often cover a bigger area, they can look very anesthetic, but are harmless. Age spots are simply a reaction of the skin to Ultraviolet (UV) light. When exposed to UV light the production of melanin accelerates. This extra melanin helps to protect the deeper layers of the skin. It creates the often-desired suntan, but can also cause age- or sunspots.

Use High SPF Sunscreen

To prevent those spots, use a sunscreen with a high protection, factor 30 and up is recommended by most dermatologists. For the occasional day on the beach, use zinc oxide to protect the sensitive facial skin. This is especially important when you are in the process to fade those ugly age spots. Since they constrain melanin production, products to lighten up the spots make the skin even more sensitive. Also avoid smoking, which can cause severe damage to your skin, wrinkles and age spots.

Daily Care is Important

The next thing is to establish a daily face routine. Use a gentle facial cleanser and a moisturizing cream as well as a sunscreen with a high protection factor. Even if you stay indoors, don’t forget to put on the sunscreen. Even through closed windows the UV-rays can reach your skin.

Nutgrass Root Helps

To get rid of the age spots on your skin look for products, which contain nutgrass root. Nutgrass Root is an herbal extract, which helps to removes age spots. It is found in India and is now used more commonly in a variety of cosmetics.

Bleaches are Harmful

Do not use bleaches, since those won’t only lighten up the blemishes but also the areas around them. Most likely those bleach-treatments will leave your skin even more splotchy. Instead of spending a lot of money on cosmetics, use natural products to lighten the spots. After your daily skin routine, rub lemon juice on your face and wait for a few minutes before you rinse it off. For more advice read the article on how to fade sunspots naturally. If the skin discoloration occurred during pregnancy or due to hormonal changes or develops mostly on the forehead, cheeks, and nose-area, it might also be melasma or pregnancy mask.
